WHO:

During Fall 2018, nearly 4,000 students representing 58 schools in the Irvine and Tustin Unified School Districts submitted their inventions for judging at their schools. From this, approximately 400 finalists were chosen to compete.

BACKGROUND:

Past inventions have run the gamut from the whimsical to the remarkable, including everything from clever pet grooming devices to remote control gizmos. The event was conceived by Irvine Valley College in 1987 to promote creativity and interest in STEM education in our community.

Students will compete for $10,000 in cash prizes, certificates of achievement and ribbons. The inventions will be grouped by grade level and judged on originality, usefulness, and a written description and illustration submitted by the student. Over sixty judges representing the scientific, education, civic and business communities will determine the winners. In addition, as part of its title sponsorship, Knobbe Martens will select two student inventions based on perceived patentability, and offer to conduct a pro bono prior art search and write a provisional patent application for the selected inventions.
